Every year, the statistics of Canadian Music Week continue to be more impressive: 700 artists in 45 venues. If every artist were to play for 30 minutes, you would have to spend almost 15 full days and nights to see all of them. The City of Toronto was filled with talented musicians, curious spectators and music lovers. As you can imagine, deciding which bands to see given the scope of this talent-laden music festival, was not easy. Here’s my views and memorable highlights for the 2010 CMW adventure:
The Rock Shows
Outstanding vocals, incredible energy, great musicianship, and pretty lights were the attributes of
Theset's performance. This very talented alternative rock band is based out of Victoria B.C., and about five years into their existence, they signed with Wax Records earlier this year. The future looks bright for Theset with the upcoming cross-Canada Snocore tour headlined by
Protest the Hero.

For this set, a friend of another Victoria based band,
Acres of Lions’ lead singer Jeffrey K helped out and played guitar.

In theory, the Black Swan Effect describes hard-to-predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations. Musically,
The Black Swan Effect is a four piece band from England that delivered their intoxicating rock songs with a lot of energy and fun on two occasions during Canadian Music Week. Make sure to check out their song ‘Rat in a cage.’

All the way from Copenhagen, Denmark, came
A Friend in London. The music of this four-piece band has an immediate appeal. Obviously excited to play during Canadian Music Week, A Friend in London drew in the audience and delivered a very convincing show. For friends of melodic pop rock music, this is a band to check out.

Toronto’s very own
Clothes Make the Man propelled their audience to dance to their infectious indie rock songs that are laced with some great hooks.

The next band’s high spirited performance helped the audience get into the groove and join them in ‘growing younger.’
Michou is a four piece band from Windsor, Ontario, that entertained their audience with their uplifting indie pop songs and left the audience with smiles on their faces.

Low Level Flight played an intimate show and presented new songs from their upcoming album. The new songs were very well received and the album is scheduled to be released in 2010. Currently, the band, which is headed by first Canadian Idol winner, Ryan Malcom, is playing in Mexico.

The heavy shows
Heavy and with bursting energy,
Baptized in Blood from London, Ontario, had no problem getting the crowd going, screaming, and banging their heads for an exhilarating and fun performance. If you think their studio recordings rock, wait until you see them live, where they add even more energy to their heavy tracks.

Hail the Villain from Oshawa, Ontario effectively presented their hard hitting tunes with style. The audience, already in high gear, kept going and fed off the energy of the aggressive sound of Hail the Villain.

Horizons stood out with their explosive on-stage energy. Their music is a very dynamic mix of heavy sound with screaming and melodic parts. Currently, the band has one song on their MySpace, but they are heading into the studio to record more.

To keep with the heavy spirit,
Assassinate the Following is a progressive metal band from Windsor, Ontario. Their music is dominated by driving rhythms, and technical guitar play. In terms of progression and technicality, the influences of bands like Protest the Hero or Dream Theater is apparent. For progressive metal fans, this is a band to watch out for.

Slowing Down
Some of you may know
Jay Sparrow as the front man of
Murder City Sparrows, who is currently in the process of putting together his second solo album. In producing the record, Jay worked with Jimmy Gnecco, front man of New Jersey’s band Ours. Jay Sparrow played a beautiful acoustic show that will peak the curiosities of those who await the new record.

The End
Toronto based,
A Primitive Evolution, played one of the last shows during the festival. The band plays high energy rock with groovy bass lines and strong vocals. Their live show is unique and draws the audience into their performance. The fun that this four piece has on stage is as intoxicating as their tunes.
