Interview with tHe HoLLoW ceLL

Interview with tHe HoLLoW ceLL – by Beckylou in Sydney

tHe HoLLoW ceLL are a Sydney based band using their forces of playing hard and partying hard to conquer the music world. They are a tight mixed, raw and loud band, with a powerful musical underlay. Incorporating a few different musical styles into their primarily metal music is a trend which is vast becoming popular. I say the more the merrier, especially when it comes down to the essential ingredient to life: music! I asked Gerard (lead guitar) a few questions about what he thinks of everything from where music comes from to where he dreams of it being. Read on to find out more.

Beckylou: Describe your sound in 5 words.

Gerard: Groove Driven Original Fusion Metal

Beckylou: What influenced you to make music and who/what are your main musical influences?

Gerard: Running the risk of sounding over philosophical, it is music itself that inspires me to create. It has amazing emotional control over us. It's a great feeling creating soundscapes that represent some of the messages and stories we tell.

Beckylou: If your band was a family which role would each member play?

Gerard: Besides myself, they'd definitely all be the kids, make a mess and never clean up!

Beckylou: How do you view the indie music scene in Australia?

Gerard: It's on the up, a few years back things were really at a low, which in some ways weeded out the true musicians from the trends. Nowadays many of the old venues are opening their doors up to the possibility of original live music. Thumbs up.

Beckylou: What does indieSolo mean to you?

Gerard: The opportunity to expose our sound waves to new and eager audiences. To be part of a network of folks that believe in the genuine nature of music.

Beckylou: Who writes the lyrics? Are they personally influenced?

Gerard: Lyrics are generally a joint effort from the guitarist and vocalist. We are brothers and yes, they are most definitely personal in some way for the both of us. It's almost a diary of what we've gone through.

Beckylou: Most memorable gig experience.

Gerard: Follow up EP launch 'Heavyness never sounded so sweet' at the Marquee in Sydney. It was one of those stage slams where almost everyone of our mates, colleagues, rivals, ex's, fan, you name it, they turned up. It was an electrifying atmosphere and we blew them away.

Beckylou: First CD/Tape/Record ever bought.

Gerard: Clichéd as it sounds, we could never afford tapes or CD's growing up, so radio was a big source of initial music sponging. Later when I could, it was either Metallica's Black album or Red Hot Chili Pepper's Blood Sugar Sex Magik album, both awesome.

Beckylou: Where would your ultimate live show be? Who would you be playing to?

Gerard: I kind of like the smaller type of venues, so probably in Australia, the Horden Pavilon or the Metro Theatre, playing to anyone that wants to turn up and listen.

Beckylou: If you could invite any musician/s to dinner who would it be and what would you talk about?

Gerard: Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica. Just about the industry and how to keep it together as a band. I've always found trying to keep a unit together the hardest thing.

Beckylou: Any last words?

Gerard: Live music loud... Always
