Bio
There are many approaches a band can take when writing. Some attempt to gain fans by writing simple, catchy, and easily-digestible songs that borrow from what is popular at the moment. This usually results in boring, uninspiring, and most importantly, unoriginal music. Other bands attempt to be "different" by using strange time signatures, blending multiple genres, and incorporating odd instruments. This usually results in music that is unmemorable, self-indulgent, and overbearing. So how does a band write music that is interesting and ground-breaking, but not pretentious, or catchy, without being cookie-cutter and boring?
It is with these questions in mind that Respond banded together. In January 2007, out of the ashes of what was poised to be a modestly successful New Jersey rock act, members decided it was necessary to abandon the success they had worked for and start fresh. The group started writing new material that would set them apart from their peers, to fulfill their overbearing desire to break free from the clichés that listeners today seem all too eager to swallow.
Honest music, like any truly expressionistic art, takes time and skill to craft, but the rewards outweigh the effort. Produced by the renowned Jesse Cannon, Respond's debut EP "You May Breathe / I Hear" is truly an album worth experiencing. Its intricacies illustrate their feelings about the world around them, and shows a maturity that many new bands lack. With a schedule of non-stop shows and writing for a promising full length due in 2008, this is only the beginning. |
