Called Little Bay before the battle of Lake Erie, MISERY BAY recieved its new name from the hardships that Perry's crew endured after the Battle of Lake Erie (war of 1812). The men lived in cramped quarters on their ships frozen in the ice. Constant chilling blasts from Lake Erie and the living conditions caused widespread sickness, and many men died.
