Bio
Described by OUTBURN magazine as "enthralling, first-rate modern rock," APPLE.COM as "soulful rock with a subtle electronic backdrop" and the DENVER POST as music that "pushes boundaries," Hypnogaja's brand of contemporary rock is driven by melodic, sophisticated songs that cater to no trend. The Los Angeles-based band's commitment to making honest, lasting music is evident in its rich history and constant evolution.
From its inception as a studio-based, alternative/electronica project to its full bloom into a touring rock act, Hypnogaja has built its following one fan at a time, through consistently releasing quality music that appeals to people from all walks of life and by diligently promoting via the Internet and its street team, Hcrew. The group's ever-growing success has been bolstered through tireless touring in the United States, sharing stages with acts such as Shinedown, Bobaflex, Cold, Godhead, 311 and playing hundreds of shows along the way.
Prominent television and film placements have played a major role in bringing Hypnogaja's music and name in front of mass audiences. The band's songs have been licensed to hit TV shows on every major U.S. network (including NBC's LAS VEGAS, CW's AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, FX's DIRT and many more) and their videos have been featured on MTV2's ON DEMAND and on MTVU. Additionally, Hypnogaja posters, t-shirts and stickers have been licensed for use in shows such as DEAD LIKE ME (Showtime), HEROES (NBC) and the upcoming new ABC series, PUSHING DAISIES.
Notwithstanding successes gained from exposure in traditional forms of media, Hypnogaja has always also moved ahead through non-traditional means, utilizing technology to further both its art and public visibility. Apple computers recently took note of this and interviewed the band about its success as a grass routes recording and touring act that exclusively uses Mac computers for recording, touring and promotion. BELOW SUNSET, Hypnogaja's latest studio album, is fueled by lyrically compelling songs, dynamic arrangements and soaring, melodic vocals. From the groove-oriented, heavy hitter "They Don't Care," to the psychedelic anthem, "Looking Glass," and the re-imagined, rocked-out cover of Eurythmics' hit song, "Here Comes The Rain Again," the album is a complex tapestry of musical style and texture.
Tracks from BELOW SUNSET have been featured in numerous media, including placements in the VERSUS sports network's 2007 RED, WHITE, BLACK & BLUE SUMMER promo trailer, the Bugbear/Empire video game, FLATOUT: ULTIMATE CARNAGE, the soundtrack and Scholastic audio book for Frank Beddor's novel, THE LOOKING GLASS WARS, and SATURDAY NIGHT magazine's compilation CD, SATURDAY NIGHT LOUD!, VOL. 3 (also featuring songs by Rooney, Rufus Wainwright, Kenna and other major label artists).
Acoustic versions of many of the songs from BELOW SUNSET appear on ACOUSTIC SUNSET - LIVE AT THE LONGHOUSE, produced by the legendary, multi-platinum singer/songwriter Wendy Waldman, a critically acclaimed recording artist in her own right who's written hit songs for artists such as Garth Brooks, Vanessa Williams and many more. ACOUSTIC SUNSET contains 12 stripped-down performances (all recorded live at The Longhouse in Encino, CA) plus a brand new studio track, "I'm Not One Of You." The record's intimate setting and adventurous arrangements, where the volume is pulled back without sacrificing any of the intensity, allows Hypnogaja's carefully crafted songs to shine.
"The thing I love about Hypnogaja is that there are so many threads running through their music - it's like picking up a stone, turning it over in your hands, and seeing different sides depending on the light," wrote Waldman in the album's liner notes. "Hypnogaja rocks hard with unusual, insightful and beautiful songs."
Hypnogaja is currently working on a new studio album, slated for a 2008 release. In the coming months, the band plans to release PICTURES FROM LAST NIGHT'S DREAM, a DVD of music videos and live performances, including a CGI animation video for "Looking Glass," directed by Emmy-award winning illustrator Kevin Grimm. Additionally, the band's lead vocalist, Jason Arnold (ShyBoy), has recently written and recorded vocals for the end title of the upcoming new Capcom video game, THE DEVIL MAY CRY 4, currently in production. |
