Interview with B for Eveline
B for Eveline - eclectic music that always keeps you guessing what comes next - by Mel in Toronto
It is impossible to describe B for Eveline's music without touching on almost every genre. Take for example their song ASHLEE SIMPSON IS MY FRIEND (BUT I WOULD LIKE MORE): This song starts off as electronica, jumps right into emocore, pays a visit to rock, and does a few experiments before happily returning to electronica.
This Canadian band is our third indieMortal7 and stems from Nicolet (Trois-Rivieres) in Quebec. The creative minds behind B for Eveline are Gabriel Balleux (vocals), Test Lafontaine (guitar), Pierre Fleurent (bass), Gabriel Bouvette (drum & back vocals) and Jean-Michel Blais (keyboards and other uncommon instruments). Their MySpace site also lists an additional band member: Dieu (moral support).
B for Eveline was formed by a group of friends in September 2006 and began touring in January 2007, so far mostly in Quebec. Jean-Michel has been playing keyboard for ten years, Test has been playing guitar for four years, Gabriel Bouvette has been playing drums for three years, and Gabriel Balleux and Pierre have been been singing and playing bass respectively for two years.
While Jean-Michel and Test are writing the music, it is Gabriel Balleux, with the help of Jean-Michel, who writes the lyrics. As Gabriel Balleux puts it: MON PREMIER SLOW is about when "you think you are the king, but you are nothing", and SNOWSTORM is a song about your love being 30 hours away from home.
This electro-indie-emo-rock-screamo-pop 80's band definitely has a unique style and keeps surprising their listeners.
"In your own words" – ONE on ONE with Mel and Gabriel Balleux
Mel: Who are your influences?
Gabriel: Each member has his own influences: Story of the Year, Wolf Parade, Anberlin, Taking Back Sunday, …and you will know us by the trail of dead, Bloc Party, etc.
Mel: What does it mean to you to be an indie artist?
Gabriel: Indie means independent music…so I think it's a good word to describe us!
Mel: What would you like to achieve with your music?
Gabriel: We only want to have fun and we hope that people have fun with us too.
Mel: Why was it important to B for Eveline to be an indieMortal?
Gabriel: A way to be seen.
Mel: Which opportunities do you see with indieSolo?
Gabriel: Get fans all around the world.
Mel: Why did you decide to sing in English and not in French?
Gabriel: It's easier to write and sing in English and we want to play outside of Quebec. We are not a bilingual band, but I think we can get bilingual with the music, because we will play outside of Quebec and we will have to speak English and that way, we will practice and get better every day!
Mel: What do you like best, when you perform live?
Gabriel: Play our new songs and hear people scream.
